Artemide was founded in Milan by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza. The company’s first lamp, Alfa, was designed by Mazza in 1959, establishing an approach that would unite technical innovation with expressive Italian design.

Artemide later introduced “The Human Light” as its guiding philosophy. This idea places people—not the fixture or technology—at the center of lighting design. Tolomeo, designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina, reimagined the traditional adjustable task lamp through an elegant system of articulated aluminum arms and spring balancing. Introduced in 1987, the design has grown into an extensive family of table, floor, wall, suspension and outdoor lights.

Richard Sapper’s Tizio lamp, introduced in 1972, uses counterweighted arms and an innovative structural system to provide precise, easily adjustable task lighting. Its bold silhouette has made it a defining object of twentieth-century industrial design.

Eclisse, designed by Vico Magistretti, allows its light to be adjusted through a rotating inner shade that partially or completely covers the source—creating effects that recall the phases of an eclipse. Other enduring Artemide designs include Nesso and Nessino, whose sculptural, mushroom-like forms express the optimism and experimentation of 1960s Italian design.
