Bendtsen later studied, taught and developed furniture of his own. His early Ribbon Chair, designed in 1975, is represented in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1981, he established Bensen to create furnishings that would unite sophisticated design, practical function and enduring quality.

Bensen Italia was established in 2010 through a collaboration between Niels Bendtsen and Paolo Chiarot, bringing the company’s minimalist vision together with generations of Italian furniture-making expertise. In 2018, Bensen moved its production exclusively to Italy.
