A Story of Light from Piacenza, Italy

The Davide Groppi story began in the late 1980s in a small workshop in the historic center of Piacenza, Italy. There, Groppi began inventing and producing his first lamps, eventually giving the company his own name.

Creative independence allowed him to develop a highly personal design language built around simplicity, lightness, emotion, invention and surprise. His inspirations range from art and ready-made objects to magic, experimentation and the simple desire to play with light.

Rather than treating a lamp as decoration, Groppi often reduces it to its essential purpose. Hardware disappears, structures become extraordinarily thin and the source of illumination may remain almost invisible. What remains is the effect of light itself.

Minimalist Lighting with Maximum Emotion

Davide Groppi lighting is visually restrained but conceptually rich. A line drawn across a room, a beam appearing without a visible fixture or a delicate stem rising from the floor can become an architectural gesture.

Inspired by the flexible form of a fishing rod, its extraordinarily slender stem rises from the floor and extends into the room, positioning light from above without requiring a conventional ceiling suspension.

Sampei creates the impression of a weightless line drawn through space. Its minimal base and telescoping structure allow the fixture to illuminate dining tables, seating areas and architectural features while preserving an open visual field.

The design received an ADI Compasso d’Oro award in 2014. Indoor and outdoor versions make its distinctive gesture available for residences, hospitality settings, terraces and landscaped environments.

Infinito: A Line of Architectural Light

Infinito reduces the luminaire to an exceptionally thin strip stretched from wall to wall. The stainless-steel ribbon produces indirect light while appearing as little more than a precise line cutting through the room.

Available in extended lengths, the system can respond to a variety of architectural conditions. Its adaptability makes it suitable for residential interiors, galleries, restaurants and commercial spaces where illumination must contribute to the architecture without introducing a visually heavy fixture.

The concept pays homage to Lucio Fontana and his spatial investigations. Like Fontana’s cuts through the canvas, Infinito uses one decisive gesture to change the perception of an entire surface and space.

Origine: A Sculptural Column of Light

Origine appears to emerge from the ground like a slender plant or illuminated stem. The form becomes progressively thinner as it rises, creating a mysterious vertical presence with no obvious conventional lampshade.

Its indirect light is intentionally soft and noninvasive, allowing Origine to shape the atmosphere of a room while remaining graphic and visually quiet. Different heights and an outdoor version expand its applications across living spaces, entryways, terraces and landscapes.

Origine demonstrates Groppi’s talent for transforming a simple geometric idea into an object that feels both architectural and alive.

Nulla and the Pursuit of Invisible Light

Nulla represents one of Davide Groppi’s most radical explorations. The fixture is reduced to a small opening in the ceiling from which a focused beam of light emerges. The lamp itself effectively disappears, leaving illumination as the primary visible element.

Awarded the ADI Compasso d’Oro in 2014, Nulla expresses the designer’s continuing effort to separate light from the physical object that produces it. It can emphasize a table, artwork or architectural detail with extraordinary precision while maintaining a quiet ceiling plane.

This approach makes Nulla particularly compelling for projects in which light must be dramatic but the fixture should remain visually absent.

Portable and Rechargeable Lighting

Davide Groppi also explores freedom from fixed electrical connections through portable, rechargeable lamps. These designs allow light to move with the user, creating intimacy wherever it is placed.

TeTaTeT reimagines the table lamp as a small pool of private light for dining and conversation. Its cordless form makes it especially well suited to restaurants, terraces and residential tables where visible wiring would interrupt the setting.

Vis à Vis and other portable designs continue this investigation into compact scale, autonomy and atmosphere. They demonstrate how a small amount of carefully directed light can transform an ordinary moment.

Davide Groppi’s work has received significant international recognition. Sampei and Nulla both earned the ADI Compasso d’Oro in 2014, while the rechargeable TeTaTeT received an ADI Compasso d’Oro honorable mention in 2016.
