A Multidisciplinary Design Studio

Founded in Vancouver in 2005 under the creative direction of Omer Arbel, Bocci operates as a multidisciplinary design studio, research laboratory and manufacturing company. Its work is driven by experimentation with the mechanical, chemical and physical qualities of materials.

Rather than beginning with a predetermined shape, Arbel often develops a new fabrication process and allows the material to determine the resulting form. This unconventional approach gives Bocci lighting its organic silhouettes and ensures that each piece records a particular moment in its creation.

Handcrafted Glass with an Individual Character

Glass is central to Bocci’s creative language. The studio’s artisans work with casting, free-blowing, stretching and specialized molds to encourage molten glass to behave in unexpected ways.

Because these processes rely on heat, gravity, air pressure and the natural movement of the material, no two pendants are exactly alike. Small variations in form, texture and color are essential features of authentic Bocci lighting.

The illuminated glass becomes more than a decorative shade. It filters, reflects and contains light, producing an intimate glow when viewed up close and a striking visual rhythm when multiple pendants are suspended together.

The Bocci 14 Series

The 14 series was the first Bocci lighting collection and remains one of the studio’s most recognizable designs. Each pendant is formed from two cast-glass hemispheres joined together, creating a dense, imperfect glass sphere with a softly illuminated center.

When arranged in a cluster, the pendants resemble points of light floating in space. The understated form makes the 14 series suitable for intimate residential rooms, while large compositions can extend through stairwells, entry halls and multistory commercial interiors.

Single pendants and clustered chandeliers can be configured in numerous arrangements, allowing the architecture and viewing angles of the space to shape the final installation.

The Bocci 28 Series

The 28 series emerged from an experimental glassblowing technique in which air pressure is repeatedly introduced and removed from heated glass. This process creates an irregular outer sphere containing a composition of interior glass forms, including an opaque milk-glass cavity that holds the light source.

Every 28 pendant is unique, with its own distribution of translucent and opaque elements. A broad palette of glass colors makes the series especially expressive, ranging from quiet neutral combinations to vivid, jewel-like compositions.

The Bocci 73 Series

For the 73 series, molten glass is blown into a folded vessel made from heat-resistant, ceramic-infused fabric. The fabric’s texture and gathered form are permanently captured in the cooled glass, producing thin, irregular pendants with intricate surface patterns.

When illuminated, the textured glass appears soft and almost textile-like. Individual pieces create subtle ambient light, while larger clusters resemble luminous clouds or suspended natural formations.

Custom Lighting Compositions

Bocci pendants can be installed individually, but their full architectural potential is often revealed through custom compositions. Pendants may descend at varied heights, form dense horizontal clusters or cascade through multistory spaces.

The number of pendants, glass colors, cable lengths, suspension method and overall distribution can be coordinated around the architecture. This flexibility makes Bocci especially suited to stairways, double-height living rooms, dining areas, hotel lobbies, restaurants and other spaces that call for a site-responsive lighting statement.
